MAUMEE - It doesn't matter how many game-winning drives Dick Kazmaier was a part of back in the day or that there's still only one Heisman Trophy given out every year. The former Maumee star thinks modern-day athletes go through a whole lot more.

"Today, you know about them every week, and you see them at the game, before the game, after the game, you know what they look like, you hear them talk," said the 1951 Heisman Trophy winner. "In those days, I don't think anybody knew what I looked like because I looked like because I was under the helmet all the time."

This year's Heisman hype, however, might be unprecedented. There are two players who could join Ohio State's Archie Griffin as 2-time Heisman Trophy winners: Florida's Tim Tebow and Oklahoma's Sam Bradford.

"I think he'd (Archie Griffin) welcome a 2nd 2-time-winner, and I think either a Sam Bradford or a Tim Tebow would be worthy candidates."

Both quarterbacks passed up potential riches in the pros - something that somewhat surprised Kazmaier.

"The lure of money is always there, but I think they all have qualities: family qualities, personal qualities that would let them make the decision coming back to school and be loyal to their school and their teammates and also finish out their education."

But no money doesn't mean no publicity.

"Once you're an entertainer, then there are demands and exposure that isn't the same as just being somebody again, hiding under the helmet and not having any contact with the media at all."

Not that Kazmaier's hiding at all. He's been busy raising almost 2-hundred-grand for his former high school. But even former Heisman winners like himself, even when they're out on the golf course, will be watching this year's Heisman race unfold - and see if history can be made.
