League titles have been all the rage, all season long, until now. It's time to think about extending that season- going into the playoffs.
Some teams have a shot, some teams don't. For instance, defending state Div. II champ Southview pretty much need a miracle to make it into Week 11.
Sounds blunt, but that's the way it is.
Meanwhile, Eastwood's only one example of a team that can taste the playoffs, but it's definitely not clinched. After last week's loss to Patrick Henry, the Eagles are in the eighth and final spot in Div. IV Region 14, behind Milan Edison, Ottawa-Glandorf, and Genoa. Because Eastwood is playing Div. V Gibsonburg, a win alone won't help their cause.
The Eagles need some help from the teams they've played - to win - in order to cement the postseason.
Here's a look at area teams that will make the state postseason playoffs and some fringe teams on the the bubble pending the outcomes of their games this weekend.
Whitmer, No. 1 in Div. II Region 2, can clinch a No. 1 seed with a win. The Panthers have already clinched a home game next weekend in the regional quarterfinals. Perrysburg, seeded ninth in Div. I Region 2, could get into the playoffs, and could be seeded as high as No. 7, if the Yellow Jackets stop Maumee Friday in the Jim White Honda Game of the Week.
In Div. I Region 2, Southview is No. 11 and need a bunch of help from other schools while St. John's Jesuit can sneak into Week 11 if Perrysburg and Brunswick loses.
Top-seeded St. Francis de Sales, can clinch a No. 1 seed in Div. II Region 6 with a win. The Knights, with their powerful start to the 2009 campaign, have made it to Week 11. Rogers, seeded fourth in Region 6, need to win in week 10. The Rams can earn a Week 11 home game with a Central Catholic loss, or can earn a home game if any of the teams the Fighting Irish beat this season win this weekend.
Fifth-seeded Central needs to win. The Irish could be as high as the No. 2 seed in the first weekend of the playoffs but they would need to have Rogers, Rocky River or Maple Heights lose. Sixth-seeded Maumee needs to beat Div. I Perrysburg and the Panthers will be in.
Napoleon has clinched a playoff spot in Div. II Region 10. The Wildcats will likely host a first-round game. No. 4 Sandusky Perkins is also in, but the Pirates can strengthen their home-field chances with a win this weekend.
Eighth-seeded Bryan is on the bubble. The Bears could be in next weekend but should also hope for a St. Paris Graham loss. Clyde, No. 11 in Region 10, are on the outside and need a lot of help.
Genoa has clinched a Div. II playoff spot with another dominating performance in 2009. The Comets, third in Region 14, need a few things to work in order to host a home playoff game. Ottawa-Glandorf, seeded fifth, are in, but the Titans will likely be on the road in Week 11. Milan Edison is on the bubble, as well as Eastwood. The Chargers and Eagles need some help in making it into the postseason.
Seven regional teams are trying to make the playoffs in Div. V. Top-seeded, undefeated and former state chap Patrick Henry need to win to host a Region 18 home game. Second-seeded Tinora are also in; and the Rams will also host a home game in Week 11.
Hicksville, No. 6 in Region 18, have clinched a playoff spot. The Aces could be on the road next week. Sherwood Fairview, Northwood, and Liberty-Benton need some help. All three are on the bubble. Archbold, seeded No. 11, need to win this weekend and hope the Apaches, Rangers, and Eagles lose.
Eleven regional teams in Div. VI are also trying to make it into the postseason. Former state champ Hopewell-Loudon need to win in Week 10 in order to play in on the road in Week 11 in Region 21. The Chieftains need Berlin Center Western Reserve and Monroeville to lose.
Tiffin Calvert, seeded 10th, need to win and pray that Hopewell-Loudon, Western Reserve and Monroeville to lose.
Carey is in the playoffs after finishing second in Region 22. The Blue Devils will likely host a first-round game next weekend. Leipsic (No. 4) and Fremont St. Joseph 9No. 5) have clinched a playoff spot in Region 22. The Crimson Streaks could host a Week 11 game if the Vikings lose in Week 10.
No. 7 Arlington, No. 8 Cory-Rawson, No. 9 Pandora-Gilboa, No. 10 McComb, No. 11 Edgerton and No. 12 Toledo Christian all control their own destiny to make the postseason dance.
Ohio High School Athletic Association divisional regional quarterfinal pairings will be set Sunday evening.
