TOLEDO, Ohio (WUPW) - Christopher Campbell, a Temperance Bedford High student-athlete, who collapsed during a recent football practice, is out of a coma.
Christopher is still at Toledo Hospital, but he and his family are grateful he's walking around and talking.
He doesn't remember anything about collapsing on the field a couple of weeks ago.
"I have no idea, I don't have any memory of anything," he said from the hospital. "I remember a few days before practice, but I don't remember the day of practice."
His mother and father do remember everything after their son went into cardiac arrest.
Both are thrilled he woke up over the weekend.
"Christopher is a very healthy child," his mother said. "He's never been to the doctor's office for a cold. "To see him like that was horrible - the blueish color was horrible."
Doctors are stilll trying to figure out what exactly happened to the incoming Bedford, Mich., junior.
But the use of automatic external defibrillators made a big difference in helping Christopher survive. He was stabilized quickly.
Still, there are plenty of days of testing ahead after he went into cardiac arrest. Doctors want to make sure he's okay, especially after being in a medically-induced coma for days.
Meanwhile, this football lover was told, he can't play anymore. It's news he's still trying to get over.
"He told me, it didn't hit me, but then I realized I wasn't going to play anymore," he said. "I know it sucks, but everything happens for a reason I guess."
If all testing goes well, Christopher is supposed to go home on either Friday or Saturday.
