PERRYSBURG, Ohio (WUPW) - Matt Marquette made the most of his last time wearing a Perrysburg uniform, leading his team to a 15-14 win in the Perrysburg all-star game.
Marquette was the center of attention all game long for the Gold team, even if it meant something good for the Black squad.
In the first quarter, Marquette faked a punt and ran with the ball team in his own territory. He was tackled short of the first down. On the next play, the Black team's Joe Missler (Whitmer) hooked up with Bryan's Alex Nossaman for a 26-yard score and a 7-0 Black lead.
However, just when it looked like the Black team was dominating the field position battle, Marquette blocked a punt attempt by St. Francis' Pat Dyer. The ball ricocheted into the end zone, where it was recovered for a score by Liberty Center's Jake Elling.
That transferred the momentum. The Gold team forced a turnover on the ensuing kickoff, setting up a field goal to take the lead at the half 9-7.
The end of the game was drama filled. The Gold led 15-14 when the Black tried a last-second field goal to win it. The kick was no good, but flags gave them a second chance. The second opportunity bounced off the goal post and the Gold had their win in a squeaker.
Marquette was named the Gold team's MVP.
