CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - One year ago to the day, Gregg Brandon was fired as Bowling Green's head football coach. Brandon was able to get another job as Virginia's offensive coordinator, but with Al Groh getting fired on Sunday, his job status is again uncertain.
Groh was 59-53 in nine years with the Cavaliers. He went to five bowl games and had 28 of his players drafted into the NFL. However, his team finished 5-7 last year and he was pressured to find somebody to replace his son as the offensive coordinator.
That somebody turned out to be Brandon.
However, Brandon's spread offense failed at Virginia. After the Cavaliers started the year 0-3, his spread was abandoned and Virginia went back to their original offense. The Cavaliers finished the year 3-7 (their worst record in 27 years) and 118th in total offense.
The school has decided that the next coach will choose his assistant coaching staff. That includes whether or not to keep any existing assistants like Brandon.
