DOWNTOWN TOLEDO - Troy Brisport, the 34-year-old man accused of holding a Detroit woman hostage in a West Toledo apartment complex for four days, faced a judge on Tuesday.
Brisport appeared in Toledo Municipal Court after he was accused of kidnapping Shykea Boykin, 22, back on Feb. 11. His bond was set at $400,000 but his case was continued until Wednesday in order for him to find an attorney.
He's been charged with kidnapping, ransom / shield hostage and felonious assault. Both charges carry a $200,000 bond.
He allegedly picked up the woman in Detroit after she told him she had nowhere to stay.
Apparently Boykin didn't know the 34-year old, but Toledo police believe she fell asleep in Brisport's car, and he drove to Toledo. Detectives said the vehicle traveled into Lucas County and the Tamarack Creek Apartments on the Toledo's west side.
"He drove around (Detroit) and we don't know if it was his intent to find a person to abduct," said Captain Ray Carroll, Toledo Police Dept.
Boykin told police that after she fell asleep her alleged abductor handcuffed her wrists and ankles, gagged her, undressed her and put her in an adult diaper, then read Bible passages, said police Capt. Ray Carroll.
She apparently was not sexually assaulted, Capt. Carroll said.
However, court documents alleged that Brisport tried several times to suffocate the woman using a pillow and blanket.
"During the course of the time she was with them, he kept her restrained. There were points where he choked her, and put a towel over her face."
Boykin escaped on Saturday after four days from Brisport's apartment while the alleged abductor was sleeping. She was seen wandering around the parking lot wearing an adult diaper, a t-shirt, handcuffs, and little else. She managed to call 9-1-1.
Carroll said is the department has reached out to other jurisdictions in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut for assistance. Investigators hope to see if there are any similar situations like the one that allegedly unfolded in the Glass City.
Investigators said Brisport used to frequent those states.
