DOWNTOWN TOLEDO - Toledo Police arrested Deshawn McCardell late Sunday evening and held the 17-year-old in the early Sunday morning murder of an aspiring high school football player.

Deshawn was arraigned in Lucas County Juvenile Court Monday and was charged with one count of murder in the shooting death of 15-year-old Antonyo Phillips, a Rogers High School football player.

Police said the 17-year-old was arrested Sunday evening at the department's Safety Building downtown. In addition to being charged with murder, Deshawn was charged with delinquency.

Antonyo, who had aspirations of playing football for Michigan State University and possibly the NFL, was shot in the back early Sunday morning on Cottage Avenue in Central Toledo. He later died after being transferred to St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center.

The 6-foot-2, 235-pound freshman played defensive tackle for the Rogers High Rams football program this past fall.

The Juvenile Court judge ordered Deshawn to be back in court Jan. 6, 2009. The court will start to determine if the shooting suspect will be tried as an adult.
