DOWNTOWN TOLEDO - A Lucas County Common Pleas Court judge said he will decide by Friday afternoon if he will halt the layoffs of 20 Toledo Police command officers.
Judge Frederick McDonald heard arguments Tuesday afternoon for and against the request for the judge to issue a temporary restraining order and block the layoffs of the command officers. Last week the Toledo Police Command Officers’ Association filed a lawsuit against the city claiming the layoffs were against its contract.
Twenty command officers are to be among 150 Toledo Police
Officers to be laid off on May 1 in an effort to close part of a
$20 million budget deficit.
The TPCOA claims the layoffs go against their contract
because their current contract requires a mandatory staffing level.
The command police union said its officers can only be laid off if
they go to arbitration or the city trims 10% of the entire force
first.
City officials said they have cut 10% of the city's police
force, making the layoffs legal.
Tuesday's witness list included TPCOA President Sgt. Terry
Stewart, Chief of Staff Bob Reinbolt, and John Bivisch, who helped
develop the 2009 Toledo city budget.
Judge McDonald has given both sides until Wednesday to turn in any additional written arguments.
