According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, police around the Midwest are cracking down on drunk drivers for the upcoming holiday weekend. The increased effort starts today, Jul. 1 and will go until Jul. 5.

The police will be out in force and targeting motorists who are driving drunk following their Independence Day celebrations. Police are trying to prevent what happened in 2007 from happening again.

That year 34 per cent of all the drivers involved in crashes here at or above the legal limit; and in all of the 200 traffic-related fatalities, 44 per cent of the drivers or motorcycle riders were at or above the legal limit.

People who are caught driving drunk will be arrested. Those who are arrested can lose their licenses, along with losing time from their jobs. They can also face high fines and court costs, as well as possible imprisonment.
