TOLEDO - After Saturday’s massive ice rescue on Lake Erie, students are learning proper procedure when out on the ice and water.
A representative with Safe Kids of Greater Toledo and the Marina Coordinator with the City of Toledo gave a presentation to students at St. Pius X in West Toledo.
Marina Coordinator Mike Schabeck explained to students that no ice is safe.
"This is a good age to (teach children) because there are so many things in the movies where people are being heroes," said Schabeck. "Well, heroes can get in trouble also so we try to encourage them not to go in water because they will probably get hurt."
Presentations like the one given on Monday are done at various schools during the winter months.
So far more than 2,000 students have learned how to use flotation devices and not to go in the water to save someone who is in trouble, among other things.
Most of the kids will learn these important tips, and then pass them along to their parents.
