TOLEDO, Ohio - Those who've fallen on hard times are counting every dollar trying to make sense of mounting bills.

It's a tough task for many and often times they don't know where to turn.

Brett Varner and Cindy Keil, Toledo area Re/max realtor, said the median home value in the Glass City is $67,000. That's about a 20% drop - a real sign that the foreclosure crisis is truly affecting the area housing market.

In light of the crisis, Varner and Keil have started a foreclosure relief team in a way to help relieve some of the stress for those who are on the verge of losing their homes.

They are available to explain options other than foreclosure, like being able to fore go your mortgage payment for a short period of time, or reduce the payment, even selling the home for less than it's worth.

But their main goal is to do everything they can to keep you in your home.

"We've all driven through neighborhoods where we've seen grass a foot high, mail boxes kicked off posts," Varner said. "Since last winter all kinds of things happen to homes when nobody's living in them. As a result it brings down values in our neighborhoods."

"You have to call, not just sit on the fence and wait for the government or someone else to help them," Keil added. "They really need to know what their options are so they are informed and can make an informed decision on what's best for them."

Keil said for you to be proactive, to look for an attorney or call your lender. If that doesn't work you can contact their foreclosure relief team.

There is no fee upfront and they will give you a free consultation explaining your options.
