DOWNTOWN TOLEDO - Toledo Police command officers and the City of Toledo continue to battle it out in common pleas court. The two sides agreed that they would call witnesses and present evidence to a Lucas County Common Pleas judge on Tuesday.
The Toledo Police Command Officer's Association filed a restraining order against the city, attempting to stop the layoff of 20 command officers - part of the city's move to trim 150 police officers by May 1.
The TPCOA claims the layoffs go against their contract because their current contract requires a mandatory staffing level. The command police union said its officer can only be laid off if they go to arbitration or the city trims 10% of the entire force first.
City officials said they have cut 10% of the city's police
force, making the layoffs legal.
On Tuesday, the judge is expected to either rule that the
restraining order will remain in effect until both sides can sit
down with an arbitrator, that the ruling would stop the May 1
layoff of command officers, or else go ahead with the 150
layoffs.
