FINDLAY, Ohio - 'Cap and Trade' is a very popular phrase in Washington DC these
days. It was also a hot topic in Findlay Thursday night.
The bill's name comes from two ideas: A cap on greenhouse gases, but companies could trade carbon
permits, if they go over the allotted amount.
There's much more to it, but the bottom line for the crowd protesting outside the Hancock County Courthouse is that it will hit you in the pocket.
"The government claims that they're not going to tax people, ok
we're going to tax the entities, the utility companies that provide
electricity, propane, gas. They're gonna tax them, they're going to
pass that cost onto us as consumers," said Jeff Sines who is
against the bill.
Supporters say this bill will help turn families toward
cleaner sources of energy. Others say all the energy we need is
already here.
"I know there's coal that needs to be mined and oil that needs
to be drilled and I think that would create millions of jobs if
they would just do that," said Dan McDonald who is against the
bill.
This bill narrowly passed the House, now it's up to the
Senate. That group wants people to call their Senator and let them
know what you think.
"We're out here to educate people, and say here's the number,
call if you're concerned, It's just raising awareness to this,"
said Cheryl Blakely who is against the bill.
"We want people to open their eyes, know what this bill is.
We've had so many people ask what is the cap and trade issue? They
have no clue. We encourage people: find out what it is,"said
Sines.
