ROSSFORD, Ohio - Many Rossford residents had questions for the developers of a
potential Toledo casino Monday night.
Even though it is not technically in Rossford, that city does
play a significant role, because the casino would sit directly on
the Rossford/Toledo border.
Rossford city council members passed a resolution Monday
night supporting a casino, but not after getting some assurances
from casino developers that there would be discussions with
Rossford fire and police about possible contracts.
Representatives Penn National Gaming, the company that would
develop a Toledo casino, said that they have worked with cities
like Harrisburg, Penn., to help that community get a new ladder
truck for its fire department.
Rossford Mayor Bill Verbosky said that the city will change
and needs to change with a casino. One of the city's former mayors
said he'd like to see any assurances in writing.
"A few years ago, Rossford got stung by not having things in
writing," said former mayor Louie Bauer. "There's nothing. So
please understand that there's probably some concerns. Are you
going to compensate Rossford for the cost?"
Supporters say a casino in Toledo will not only benefit
Toledo, but the whole state. The Rossford community got more
specifics on Monday - about $3.6 million will go to Wood County,
with just under $250,000 going to Rossford City Schools.
A traffic study in the area is also underway to see how it
would affect both cities.
