TOLEDO, Ohio - As starting quarterback Aaron Opelt recovers from a shoulder injury, D.J. Lenehan and Alex Pettee were supposed to be battling it out for the backup job.
Apparently, that job looks like it's firmly in Pettee's grasp, barring miraculous progress from the incoming freshmen.
Toledo officials told Hardcore Sports that Lenehan withdrew at the end of the semester to pursue other opportunities. They weren't sure what those opportunites were.
Lenehan came to UT after throwing for over 7,700 yards in high school, the 2nd-highest total in Pennsylvania high school history. In his freshman year, he came in when injuries depleted the depth chart and played in 6 games, 3 of them starts. Lenehan finished the year with 630 yards passing, 4 TD's, and 4 interceptions.
Last year, he was redshirted in his sophomore year.
In the most recent spring game, as Opelt sat out, Lenehan ran for 2 scores, but was picked off 3 times, finishing 14-30 for 146 yards through the air.
Meanwhile, in the same game, Pettee was 25-39 for 203 yards, a score, and he was picked off twice.
As of Friday night, Lenehan's name was still on the Rockets' website.
