FREMONT - Alycia Baumgardner used to be a cheerleader. She can do all the flips. And she tries to take care of her nails.

But Alycia's, not quite your typical teenage girl.

Nails? Who cares?

"I'm not afraid. It happens, and I have broken my nail, but they grow back, so it's all good," said the 15-year-old from Fremont.

See, Alycia comes from a boxing family. When she was four, she started wrestling, and even against boys, she won. That toughness, transcended to boxing.

This past weekend, Alycia won the 110-pound weight class for 15- and 16-year-olds at the Junior Olympics in Denver, Colorado.

"There are people that are intimidated by me and my friends," she says. "They're happy for me that I'm a boxer, but they're also intimidated."

That includes her guy classmates. After all, this is a girl who, out of her 18 wins, has had 10 decided by technical knockout. And as women's boxing evolves into an Olympic sport...

"She really has a chance to win the gold medal. That's how confident I am in her and her ability," said one of her boxing coaches, Buddy Laughlin.

"The uppercuts, the body shots, and to have the savvy to see punches coming and be able to react to them, she's an all-around fighter."

But she's also just like any other 15-year-old mall-loving girl - only, with some extra hardware, and on top of any stylish belt, she also has some championship belts.
