Toledo, Ohio (WUPW) - The Ohio Department of Health tells FOX Toledo News they have updated the immunization requirements for children beginning with the upcoming 2010-2011 school year.

Parents should be aware there are additional shots required for children entering kindergarten and those entering seventh grade this fall.

  • A second dose of Varicella (Chickenpox vaccine) is now required for kindergarteners.
  • A Tdap (Tetanus, Pertussis, and Diphtheria vaccine) booster shot is now required for seventh graders.

“The changes are based on scientific evidence. They are needed to fully protect our children,” said Dr. David Grossman, Health Commissioner for the Toledo-Lucas County Health Department.

Complete details of all school immunization requirements can be found by clicking this link: www.odh.ohio.gov - type “school entry” in the search box.

The Ohio Revised Code was signed into law on December 10, 2009 by Dr. Alvin D. Jackson, M.D., Director of Ohio Department of Health (ODH).

Parents of kindergartners and seventh graders are encouraged to make an appointment with their child’s doctor or to visit a Shots 4 Tots immunization clinic.
