DETROIT, Mich. - Gunmen in a green minivan opened fire on a group of teenagers waiting at a bus stop near a Detroit school on Tuesday, wounding at least seven including two who were in critical condition, authorities said.
WJBK Fox 2 myFOXDetroit.com is reporting the mass shooting unfolded on the corner of W. Warren and Southfield Road, north of the city of Dearborn along the M39 Southfield freeway.
At least five of the teens had just gotten out of summer classes at Cody Ninth Grade Academy when they were shot at the nearby bus stop, said Detroit Public Schools Police Chief Roderick Grimes.
Two gunmen, possibly three, emerged from the green minivan and "asked for a person by name" before they "opened fire at the crowd," Grimes said.
The students' names and ages weren't immediately released. Initial reports indicated that two boys, two girls and two other unidentified victims were struck by bullets.
The victims were taken to several hospitals in the area, but their conditions were not known.
"We have confirmed the name of several of the students, but we have to make sure we talk with the parents," Detroit Public Schools emergency financial manager Robert Bobb said at the scene of the shooting on Detroit's west side.
Bria Wilson, 15, was standing at the bus stop when she heard the gunfire. Wilson said she was facing away from the shooters and ran away after the shots were fired. She said she saw a 16-year-old male friend lying on the ground, bleeding.
"They were so close-it almost hit me," said Wilson, who was heading home from summer school classes at Cody Academy.
Fox 2 learned at least two shooters were laying in wait at a gas station, which is very close to the bus stop. They were holed up in a green van, wearing some kind of masks to cover their faces, before they jumped out and opened fire. Witnesses told Fox 2 that one of shooters exclaimed "you know who we're waiting for."
Earlier video shows a woman being handcuffed and placed in a police car, then taken away. Fox 2 does not know at this time if this is the suspect of the shooting.
Police say two young men used a Shell gas station at the corner West Warren and Southfield as a place to narrow in on their target. The shooters placed masks over their faces, grabbed their guns and walked over to a nearby bus stop. There they called out a name, said "you know who we're looking for" and opened fire, hitting seven people.
"The Detroit Police and Detroit Public Schools Police have been interviewing several people that were on the scene at this time, and we'll also be talking to those who were involved in the shooting," said Detroit Police Dep. Chief Rod Liggons. "We're going to look at everything we can as far as evidence to find out who actually did this."
Police are currently searching for the shooters, who took off running down Longacre Street, jumped in a green mini van and then fled the scene. Dogs are being used to search for their weapons in the area where witnesses last spotted the suspects.
The hunt is on to find them. If you know anything about the shooting, call Detroit Police (313) 596-5600 or 1-800-CRIMESTOPPERS.
