BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The first Skate for the Cure is Sunday from 7:30-10:30 p.m. in the BGSU Ice Arena.
Proceeds from the event will be used to aid in the fight against breast cancer and to benefit the Northwest Ohio chapter of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
The fundraiser is being coordinated by the Ice Arena staff, the BGSU 1000 freshmen seminar class and the department of recreation and wellness staff. The event serves as one of five projects for the class.
"Within the different organizations at the Ice Arena, we know a lot of survivors or people who have breast cancer," said Stephanie Wilson, a BGSU junior and Ice Arena employee who helped plan the event. "We thought this would be a great way to tie the Ice Arena in with the university and the community."
Wilson, Ice Arena Assistant Laura Dunn and senior sport management major Ben Berghaus are overseeing the project.
The class is designed to get freshmen "plugged into different parts of the university," Berghaus said.
"The class has shown a lot of interest in doing this," Wilson said. "We want to try to make it an annual event, if it goes over well and people respond well to it."
Admission is $4 for the general public, $3 for BGSU students, faculty and staff, and $2 for toddlers with parental supervision. Skate rental is $2 for everyone.
A walk-a-thon fee of $5 is available for persons who wish to participate but do not feel comfortable skating.
Pink T-shirts for the event were designed by BGSU students Andrea Pereira de Almeida, a graduate of BG High School, and Emily Martin.
The shirts will be available for $10 at the event.
Donation recognition cards also will be available for $1 and those cards will be hung in the arena.
