Still no deal between TPD, city

More negotiations do not produce deal

TOLEDO. Ohio - Even after some 10 hours of negotiations Thursday, there still no deal between Toledo and and the Toledo Police Patrolman's Association.

FOX Toledo hasn't learned a whole lot about the negotiations because we were told that the neutral third party, the fact finder, issued a media blackout.

We're told negotiations will continue with the fact finder returning possibly next week. We're also told the city did not offer binding arbitration, which would have essentially been the city's best offer. Apparently the discussions never reached the point of offering that deal.

Timing is key in all of these negotiations because the city's finances aren't getting any better.

"They're very troubling and it just points to the fact that we have a very deep recession," said Toledo city councilman George Sarantou.

City council members learned Thursday that income tax receipts are down about 11.5% from this time last year.

"Clearly the biggest drop is the manufacturing area, specifically automobile manufacturing where we're not seeing the revenue we would normally would get," said Sarantou.

Some feel the city will still hit the projection of $145 million in income taxes.

"If we look at today's numbers and what we've seen so far, it would appear that the 145 is a reasonable number. If things were to get worse, it would go much lower than that. But I would tend to think on the information we have at present that it will be somewhere $145 million," said Sarantou.
