Toledo, Ohio - The Manhattan boulevard Kroger in North Toledo plans to shut its door this October. The company isn't saying why, but neighbors are saying plenty.
"I think it sucks. We're got all the way out to Jackman or Point
Place. That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard," said
North Toledo resident Catherine Horoszewski.
That's the most animated answer Fox Toledo found Friday
night, but Some not as animated still fear the worst.
"It's gonna be catsstrophic, it's gonna be catastrophic
because that's their only means to get back and forth to the
store," said North Toledo resident Edward Jakubowski.
Transportation seems to be the biggest concern.
"There's a lot of people out here that don't have transportation. They can get there just by walking. That's how it is around here, a lot of people don't have transportation and I know a lot of people rely on the plaza around here," said James Nowak, who has family living in North Toledo.
What happens next to the plaza is unclear, but shoppers know
they are going to have to make changes to their routine. They're
all hopeful that the change to this part of North Toledo isn't
another empty shopping center.
"It's just gonna be empty. They're not going to put anything
else in there. We're going to take a beating over here on this
side. We always do," said Nowak.
As part of its changes, Kroger has said it will replace its current Waterville store with a new one. The company is also hoping to put a new store in Perrysburg. Employees from the Manhattan boulevard store will be relocated to other Kroger stores.
