MONROE, Mich. - A task force re-searched a wooded area with shovels and rakes next to the Charlotte Arms Apartments Friday afternoon in the continual search for 5-year-old Nevaeh Buchanan of Monroe, Mich.
Friday's search was at least the second time that particular section of woods on Macomb Street was searched near where Nevaeh was reportedly abducted Sunday evening. Several vehicles were also searched and the FBI conducted interviews, asking if residents saw anything Sunday before Nevaeh disappeared.
During a news conference Friday morning, Monroe County Sheriff Tilman Crutchfield said that investigators interviewed 240 people Thursday and have received upwards of 530 tips since Sunday.
FBI agent Andy Arena described the investigation as a flexible one because the persons of interest are constantly changing.
There are two known persons of interest -- 39-year-old George Kennedy and 48-year-old Roy Lee Smith -- but Arena would not confirm if Jennifer Buchanan, Nevaeh's mother, is one. Kennedy is a convicted sex offender and boyfriend of Nevaeh's mother, and Smith is also a convicted sex offender and an acquaintance of Jennifer.
"I think expectations in our society today are a little bit unrealistic because of CSI an other TV shows," Agent Arena said. "There are protocols and procedures that the crime lab has to follow."
Sheriff Crutchfield said evidence submitted to the Michigan State Police crime lab in Northville, Mich., in recent days is being analyzed.
