MONROE, Mich. - Sherry Buchanan is pleading for the safe return of her granddaughter Nevaeh Amyah Buchanan, the 5-year-old Monroe, Mich., girl who went missing Sunday evening from her parent's apartment complex.
"If anybody has her and she's still alive, just bring her back to me," Sherry said Tuesday. "That's all I ask of you, and I won't ask no questions. I just want to hold her and keep her near to me. And if she's not, let me lay her down and let her be peaceful with the good Lord up above."
The FBI, Michigan State Police, and the Detroit Violent Crimes Task Force have been brought in to assist in the disappearance.
Authorities said they have at least one person in custody. His name is George Kennedy, a 39-year-old close friend of Jennifer Buchanan - Nevaeh's mother.
Jennifer told FOX Toledo News that Kennedy is a registered sex offender and he is being held for violating parole.
"I can't put it past him," Jennifer said if she believed Kennedy allegedly abducted her daughter. "But honestly, I can't see him doing it but I won't put it past him."
Jennifer went on to explain that she feels she can't put it past anyone at this point. Even has shy as Nevaeh is, the 5-year-old knows Kennedy well enough to comfortably get in a car with him, Jennifer said.
Authorities have said nobody has been charged in the alleged abduction. Monroe County Sheriff deputies said hundreds of people have been interviewed since Sunday evening in regards to the disappearance of the little girl.
According to the Michigan Department of Corrections Web site, there is one person by the name of George Kennedy registered as a sex offender in Monroe.
Shane Hinojosa, Nevaeh's father, has been ordered to take a polygraph test at the Monroe Police department. Hinojosa lives in Toledo, Ohio, and has reportedly not seen his daughter for nearly three years.
Police questioned and released a second man on Tuesday. He was described as a transient.
Until detectives locate Nevaeh, they'll keep looking everywhere, and leave all possibilities open.
Nevaeh has been missing since Sunday evening. She was last seen at around 6:30 p.m. riding a scooter in the parking lot in the 1100 block of Macomb Street when she was apparently abducted. Her scooter was found in the parking lot.
The Monroe County Sheriff reiterated that anyone who has specific knowledge of any events at the Charlotte Arms Apartments on Macomb Street, anything that happened between 5 p.m. and 11 p.m. on Sunday contact (734) 243-7070 or 9-1-1.
