TOLEDO, Ohio (WUPW) - We're on call with an effort to fight a disease that can lead to early death.

Bikers began the 50 mile ride to benefit the Sickle Cell Project of Northwest Ohio in Central Toledo, Saturday afternoon.

Sickle Cell is a genetic blood disorder that can lead to various medical complications.

Organizers said this is a disease many people are unaware of and this ride helps to get the word out.

Money raised will go toward purchasing educational materials and other things grants don't cover.

September is Sickle Cell Awareness Month.
