DOWNTOWN TOLEDO (WUPW) - Michael Swiergosz's second trial is underway in Lucas County Common Pleas Court.
The State called several witnesses to the stand Wednesday, including Swiergosz's ex-wife Barb, who didn't want to be recorded. She testified Swiergosz hit her over the head with a tire iron, forced her to strip naked, and bound her hands during an alleged hostage situation at Sunset Retirement Home in April 2009.
His ex-wife testified that the 47-year-old Springfield Township resident forced her to have sex all while threatening her with a gun.
"As the day went on, he said he wouldn't hurt her but couldn't promise he wouldn't hurt himself," said Lucas County Sheriff Sgt. William Talbot.
During Wednesday's first day of testimony, Swiergosz broke down and cried several times, including when Sgt. Talbot took the stand.
The defense is expected to present its case Thursday. The trial should wrap up by Friday.
Swiergosz was sentenced in December 2009 to seven years in prison for a March 10 incident involving his wife. He could face more than 99 years combined between both cases if found guilty in this second trial.
