TOLEDO, Ohio (WUPW) - You probably wouldn't get very far setting out in a cardboard boat, unless you're a part of the Maritime Academy of Toledo.
Maritime students are designed and built their own cardboard vessels.
It's really a neat idea. They started this last year and it was so successful, they decided to continue the tradition.
The students have had about a week to design and build the boats and then race them Wednesday. They'll test them out for the first time in the water, with races and all.
Captain Rick Brown, the only certified teacher in the region was seen helping the students Tuesday put the finishing touches on their cardboard boats.
The sloops range from 3.5-feet to 5-feet long and between 28-36 inches wide.
The students started with a smaller model and worked their way up. In a week's time they finished the project.
