FOX Toledo and the American Red Cross want to make sure you have a brand new working smoke detector for your home. Smoke detectors will be handed out while supplies last.

Throughout 2009 FOX Toledo, the Red Cross and several fire regional fire departments gave away thousands of free smoke detectors to area residents in need. We instituted this campaign in the wake of a  January 2009  house fire on Toledo's east side that killed two children and injured four others.

A smoke alarm is critical for the early detection of a fire in your home and could mean the difference between life and death, according to FireSafety.gov. Fires can occur in a variety of ways and in any room of your home. But no matter where or how, having a smoke alarm is the first key step towards your family's safety.

If you miss the Feb. 12 free smoke detector giveaway, FOX Toledo has many more giveaways planned throughout the region throughout the 2010 winter season.
