Dog warden ordered not to euthanize puppies

TOLEDO, Ohio - Puppies at the Lucas County Dog Warden's pound will be spared until at least March 2010, county commissioners said Monday.

Commissioners voted to extend the moratorium on euthanizing puppies past the end of the year.

This is part of the effort to overhaul the dog warden's office in the wake of current warden Tom Skeldon announcing his retirement in November. Commissioners and a dog warden advisory committee began reviewing all the policies and procedures at the pound. They want to determine what changes need to be made.

Upwards of 400 puppies have been euthanized at the county pound since 2007. The high number is something the commissioners want reduced in years to come.

"This is a positive step in reducing the kill rate at the dog warden's office and saving the lives of adoptable puppies, so that’s a positive," said Commissioner Ben Konop.
