OREGON, Ohio (WUPW) - Elected officials, religious and community organizations hand-delivered a letter to the Sunoco Refinery showing disgust that the company is hiring out of state workers to perform maintenance on the plant.

The refinery on Woodville Road in Oregon will take a 30-day maintenance shutdown and about 50 jobs out of 600 are out of state jobs.

The group that voiced their opinion Friday morning said no matter the number, the local economy is in bad shape and the region needs the jobs.

"For an employer who has been historically very good to and partnered with Toledo, Sunoco - it's kind of appalling that they've decided at this time when we're down and out that they've decided to snub us and walk away," said Bob Lynn, Toledo Jobs with Justice.

Sunoco Oil officials said of 600 contractors only 50 are from out of town and this is part of routine operations and happens every two years. It's also committed to protecting current jobs in Toledo and Oregon with economic benefits.
