TOLEDO, Ohio (WUPW) - People For the Ethical Treatment of Animals has awarded Toledo Police Sgt. Mark Fry, who brought a fawn back to life after its pregnant mother was killed by a vehicle.

For his heroism, PETA presented Sgt. Fry with its One Can Make a Difference Award, the organization said Wednesday.

The award takes its name from PETA President Ingrid E. Newkirk's 2008 book "One Can Make a Difference." The book is a compilation of more than 50 original, thought-provoking essays written by a variety of people—including Willie Nelson, Mickey Rourke, His Holiness The Dalai Lama, and "everyday heroes" who have had a positive impact on the world.

"Thanks to Sergeant Fry's quick thinking and compassion, what could have been a completely tragic situation instead has a hopeful ending," PETA Senior Vice President of Campaigns Dan Mathews said. "Toledo is very fortunate to have a police officer who stands ready to protect all of the city's residents."

Sgt. Fry will receive a framed certificate and a signed copy of Newkirk's book.
