TOLEDO, Ohio - It looks like nothing will stop the layoff of 150 Toledo police officers scheduled for Friday.
The Toledo Police Patrolman’s Association said Thursday no new talks are scheduled between the union and the city.
City Councilman D. Michael Collins had plans to ask his fellow council members to support him in a vote of no confidence in Mayor Carty Finkbeiner. Collins said he has called for a meeting on May 5 to vote on the issue.
But in the past 24 hours Collins said two council members backed off and he was forced to cancel the meeting.
"As of yesterday I had support of council but today two council members withdrew their support. So I canceled the meeting on Monday because there is not the political will to address this issue or not a reason to have a meeting."
Councilman Collins said the move is in response to the mayor calling off a tentative deal between the TPPA and the city administration, which would have avoided the police layoffs.
“It is a sad state of affairs we're in when you have an individual sitting there as mayor, who has accomplished what he's accomplished, and compromised the safety of the citizens of this community," Collins said.
The layoffs go in to effect at the close of business Friday.
