NEW YORK - Advocates across the country are asking commuters to 'dump the pump' and go with public transportation, emphasizing gas and money savings.
The American Public Transit Association sponsors the event and public transportation systems across the country are participating. In fact, many city and area public transportation systems are offering free rides.
"With gas prices increasing 33 percent since December, coupled with uncertain economic times, people have been looking for ways to save and riding public transportation is a great choice to make," APTA President William Millar said in a release.
Earlier this year APTA found that individuals can save an average of $8,691 a year by riding public transportation, rather than driving. The study was based on May national average gas prices and the unreserved monthly parking rates. The top cities where people can save by taking public transportation included Boston, New York and San Francisco.
Other sites can show what one can save with public transportation. The Greensboro Transit Authority has created a calculator to help determine how much money could be saved by substituting public transportation for driving your car. (The calculator uses GTA's fare cost, but the estimate is a good start.) The APTA also has a transit calculator .
Another way to save is to commute with your bike. Kiplingers.com has a calculator to see how much you can save by pedaling to work.
